f you are wondering if you might be eligible to get Canadian citizenship, you should be aware that there is always a process that must be followed to gain citizenship in a country.

If you are already living in Canada and want to become a citizen, you are well on your way to being eligible.

For those outside of the country, the process requires a few more steps.

Thankfully, the application and paperwork process and the other steps are readily available as public knowledge.

If you are wondering if you are able to become a Canadian citizen, this article will tell you what you need to know!


1)You will have to provide proof that you can write and speak in one of Canada’s official languages.

This means that, if you can speak English or French, you will meet this requirement.

There are many countries where French and English are taught and native speakers of either language in other countries will have already met this requirement and need only provide proof.

Adequate knowledge is defined as the ability to understand simple questions and directions and to use basic grammar as well as being able to express oneself in conversation and to show knowledge of common words and phrases.

2)You will need to become a permanent resident.

This means that you will have to be physically present for at least 730 days in a five year period.

This means that you need to be in Canada for two years to be able to meet this requirement.

If you are employed on a full-time basis by a Canadian business, this will make you eligible even if you are outside of Canada within the five year window.

f you have a spouse inside Canada that is employed full-time in Canada, this will also allow you to be outside of Canada during this five year period.

Children who are under 19 and are accompanying a parent are also able to be outside of Canada during this five year period.

4)You must have filed taxes for at least 3 years of the 5 years period and have paid any income tax that is owed during that period.


If you meet these requirements, the next step is to apply and fill out the application.

You simply mail the application with the fee and wait to hear back.

If you have been in prison or are on parole or are serving a conditional service, you will not be eligible for citizenship.

For those with Canadian parents, you should look into whether or not you are already a citizen.

Canadian Armed Forces members might be eligible for a fast-track application.

Always remember to research and apply for any necessary work permits or other documentation that might be required for you to start working when you get to Canada.

Also be sure that you fill out any necessary documents if you are going to be studying while you are living there.

You will have to provide fingerprints and you will have to take the citizenship test.

There are possible exemptions for people over 54 and under 18.

There are lots of handy preparation materials for the test to help applicants prepare.

Planning to become a citizen in a new country is a big decision but if you are armed with the correct information before you start planning to move to Canada, it will just be a matter of time before you have completed the citizenship process and become a legal citizen of Canada!
