wareness of Alzheimer’s as a disease is relatively new.
We know more about it each year but there is still much to be learned.
Because there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, it is important to be sure that you do everything that you can to avoid getting it.
There is a lot of speculation about what causes Alzheimer’s, from genetics to diet to retirement causing lack of brain activity on a daily basis.
The best chance we have at this point of preventing it is to make sure that we avoid exposure to chemicals and unhealthy foods each day.
There have been some clear links drawn between diet and Alzheimer’s in recent years and studies have shown that there are foods that are much more likely to cause the disease.
It is commonly recommended that older people keep healthy cholesterol in their diet so their brain gets the nutrition that it needs to maintain health, but everyone should avoid bad cholesterol.
Here are the foods that you should avoid if you don’t want to get Alzheimer’s when you get older.
Processed foods: Any processed food, from fast food to processed cheeses, to fake canned cheese like Cheez Whiz have all been linked to many health conditions, Alzheimer’s included.
If you want to have cheese and other fats in your diet, make sure that you are eating healthy ones like the fats that come from fish, eggs and whole milk cheeses. Lower fat options for cheeses include goat and sheep’s milk cheese.
Fast food should never be a regular part of your diet as it is full of chemicals and other toxic substances that can lead to many conditions that are readily prevented with a healthy diet of organic foods.
Lastly, avoid daily intake of processed meats like sausage, lunch meats and bacon. While these are delicious and do provide protein, they are also full of nitrates which have been linked to the amyloid plaques that cause Alzheimer’s.
Alcohol: Consuming alcohol daily can lead to many kinds of health conditions, but beer especially has been linked to Alzheimer’s. Beer is one of the unhealthiest alcohols and is linked to many serious medical conditions.
Beer is so bad for your brain due to its nitrate content.
Avoiding beer in your daily diet can reduce your chances of getting Alzheimer’s greatly.
Wine is ok in small daily amounts but beer and sugary mixed drinks are not the right choice if you are worried about your brain’s health.
Margarine: Formerly touted as one of the best foods to eat due to its low caloric content, margarine has been debunked as a health food and is full of harmful diacetyl. Avoiding margarine is an easy way to keep a harmful food out of your diet and it will protect your brain from Alzheimer’s. Besides, real butter always tasted better anyhow.
White Foods: This category includes pasta, cake, white rice and white bread. Any food which causes your insulin to spike leads to risk of diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Plus, cutting these carb-heavy, low nutrient foods out of your diet will lead to better overall health and more energy and vigor each day.
Microwave Popcorn: As will many things that are delicious and are sold as being guilt free, microwave popcorn is one of the worst foods for your brain due to it’s diacetyl content. This chemical has been linked to increased amyloid plaques which are the major cause of Alzheimer’s.
Sugar: Sugar makes things taste good but it is not good for you. Sugar is empty calories and is absorbed far too quickly to be healthy. Any food that causes a spike in your blood sugar can lead to diabetes and damage to your brain. If you want to keep your brain and the rest of your body healthy, you will avoid sugar as often as possible!
Always remember that a healthy diet includes organic vegetables and fruits, whole wheat breads and that you can have black coffee and some wine without guilt.
Eat all desserts and treats in sparing amounts and make sure that you are active for at least a half hour every day.
Use coconut oil and olive oil for cooking and avoid processed foods and you will live a long, happy and healthy life!
